London V&A Museum will showcase furniture crafts

A few pieces of different colors of thin wood chips are stacked together to create a bird pattern; more than 10 different tools are carved out of the angels on the cupboard... This is the famous Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. The furniture exhibition held by Shanweibo Gallery will be officially open to the public on December 1st, telling people about the story of furniture making.

V&A is one of the most important museums of decorative arts and design in the world, built in 1852. This is V&A's first furniture-themed gallery and an exhibition of furniture production that is rare in the world. The organizer of the exhibition recently invited the reporter to visit.

The exhibition will be completely free, bringing together more than 200 pieces of furniture from all over the world, including famous Italian furniture, British cradle, French screens, and Japanese boxes.

“Every exhibit is telling a different story,” said Nick Humphrey, one of the directors of the exhibition. According to him, the oldest exhibits were from the Middle Ages. The furniture was completed between 1425 and 1450. It may be the reading platform in the church. There is a bevel on the upper end, where the book can be placed. The latest work is a six-drawer cabinet that was completed this year and is the work of a Swiss designer. It looks far away like some wooden sticks stacked together.

“The most important part of the exhibition is the 16 craft booths that tell people about the process of making furniture,” Humphrey said.

Lila Meneltas, another director of the exhibition, told reporters that most of the furniture here has changed due to chronological relationships and just completed. "But we tried to show visitors what they used to be."

Some works are from China, such as a washbasin stand in the Ming Dynasty. This shelf is put together with some European chairs, telling people the difference between European and Chinese craftsmanship when making the support.

“This exquisitely carved washbasin is entirely handmade,” Meneltas said. In the West, the legs of the chair are finished by the lathe process. “Chinese furniture was not used much by the 19th century. ."

There are some interactive platforms in the center of the pavilion. Visitors can find the information they need on the screen by touching the sensor.
