I’ve always been a fan of pumpkin decorations that don’t involve carving, and my go-to has become creating emoji-themed pumpkins. Last year, we decided to give it a try because the round shape of pumpkins naturally lends itself to such designs. Plus, who doesn’t love an easy project that still looks super cute?
For this project, we kept things simple and used materials you might already have lying around. First, we painted the pumpkins yellow using spray paint. Be sure to do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, and cover your work area with plenty of newspaper to avoid making a mess. Once dry, you’ll be ready to start adding the fun details.
To create different expressions, we used a variety of supplies. For example, to make a cheeky pumpkin, we glued one googly eye on and drew another curved eye with a black Sharpie. Then, we cut out a tongue from pink craft foam and added a black mouth piece for the finishing touch. For a scared pumpkin, we used white and black bottle caps to form eyes with pupils at the top, paired with a straight mouth drawn in Sharpie. A cool pumpkin was as simple as sticking on some old sunglasses using Blu-Tack and drawing a smiley face underneath. For a loved-up pumpkin, we cut out hearts from red craft foam and a smiling mouth from black foam. And for a poorly pumpkin, we just drew a sad face and wrapped a bandage around it, securing it with more Blu-Tack.
The possibilities are endless! Once everything is set, you can arrange your pumpkins in a line or even stack them for added charm. If you’re worried about stability, you can hammer a wooden skewer through the center to keep them upright. These pumpkins look great on their own, but they also serve as a great conversation starter at Halloween parties.
