Safety and Regulations
When buying a lamp, it's essential to look beyond its appearance and consider its safety features. A well-designed lamp should not only enhance your space but also protect you and your home from potential hazards. Different environments demand different levels of protection depending on how often the lamp may come into contact with dust, moisture, or other elements. For instance, a bathroom light is more likely to face water exposure than a pendant light in a bedroom.
This article explores some key terms and standards related to lighting safety that every buyer should be aware of before making a purchase.
1. Ingress Protection (IP20)
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating system is used to define the level of protection an electrical device has against solid objects and liquids. The first digit (2) refers to protection against solids like dust, while the second digit (0) indicates no protection against water. IP20 means that the internal components are protected from large particles (over 12 mm), but not from water. This is the standard for indoor lighting. However, in areas like bathrooms, higher IP ratings are necessary to ensure safety against moisture and splashes.
All Secto Design lamps come with an official rating plate for transparency and compliance.
2. IEC Protection Class II
IEC stands for the International Electrotechnical Commission, which sets global standards for electrical safety. It defines three main protection classes: I, II, and III. Class II devices, like most of our lamps, use double insulation instead of a grounding wire, making them safer for use in homes without the need for a third pin. This ensures that even if the outer casing becomes damaged, there’s still a layer of protection between the user and the live parts.
3. CE Marking
The CE marking is a mandatory conformity mark for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). It signifies that the product meets EU health, safety, and environmental protection requirements. This allows for free movement of goods across member states and gives consumers confidence that the product has been tested and approved.
4. ETL/CETL Listed
ETL/CETL certification shows that a product has been tested by Intertek, a globally recognized testing organization, and found compliant with U.S. and Canadian safety standards. This is especially important for consumers looking for reliable and safe lighting solutions. At Secto Design, we ensure all our lamps are ETL/CETL listed, and each comes with a hologram sticker as proof of authenticity and quality assurance.
