Safety and Regulations
When buying a lamp, it's not just about how it looks—it's also important to consider its safety and compliance with industry standards. Different environments require different levels of protection depending on the potential exposure to dust, moisture, or other elements. For instance, a bathroom light is more likely to come into contact with water than a bedroom pendant light. Understanding these standards helps you make safer and more informed choices when selecting lighting for your home or office.
This article explains some of the most common terms related to safety and regulation in the lighting industry, so you can better understand what they mean and why they matter.
1. Ingress Protection (IP20)
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating is a standard used to classify the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures against solid objects and liquids. The first digit (2) refers to protection against solid particles like dust, while the second digit (0) indicates no protection against water. An IP20 rating means that the internal components of the lamp are protected from large particles (over 12 mm), but not from water or moisture. This is typically the minimum standard for indoor lighting. However, in areas like bathrooms or kitchens, a higher IP rating is essential to ensure long-term performance and safety.
All Secto Design lamps are clearly marked with an official rating plate for easy reference.
2. IEC Protection Class II
IEC stands for the International Electrotechnical Commission, an organization that sets global standards for electrical equipment. It defines three main protection classes—Class I, II, and III—based on the level of insulation and the voltage used. Class II devices are designed with double insulation, which means they don’t rely on a separate earth connection for safety. This makes them ideal for use in homes and offices where grounding might not always be reliable. All Secto Design lamps are manufactured under Protection Class II, ensuring a high level of safety and durability.
3. CE Marking
The CE marking is a mandatory conformity mark for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). It indicates that the product meets all applicable EU health, safety, and environmental protection requirements. This mark is especially important for consumers because it gives them confidence that the product has been tested and approved for use. For manufacturers, it simplifies trade across Europe without additional restrictions.
4. ETL/CETL Listed
The ETL and CETL marks indicate that a product has been tested and certified by Intertek, a globally recognized testing and certification company. These certifications confirm that the product complies with the safety standards set by the United States and Canada. At Secto Design, we ensure that all our lamps carry this certification, and each one is labeled with a unique hologram sticker. This not only verifies the product’s authenticity but also confirms that it has been produced according to strict international safety guidelines.
