Can you heat a tent with a candle?

We recently tested the idea of using tealights and terracotta pots as makeshift heaters, but found them to be a significant fire hazard. Instead, we recommended the UCO Candle Lantern as a safer and more portable option for warming a tent in the field. Curious about how well it actually works, we decided to put it to the test.

Key takeaways:

  • A single candle can raise the temperature of a small three-season tent by about 4°F (2°C).
  • Heat loss through the ground is often more impactful than the heat generated by a candle.
  • For cold-weather emergencies, an inflatable sleeping pad paired with a closed-cell pad is a better investment than candles.
  • Always allow candle lanterns time to cool before handling or storing them.
  • The UCO three-candle lantern produces 5,000 BTU, but its weight might make it unsuitable for a go-bag.

The UCO Candle Lantern

If you're going to use a candle inside a tent, the UCO Candle Lantern is one of the safest options available. It measures just 4.25 inches (11 cm) when collapsed, with a metal sheath that safely encloses the glass. Extend it to 6.25 inches (17 cm) to reveal the glass and candle. The lantern weighs 8.8 ounces (249 grams) with a candle included, while the aluminum version is slightly lighter at 6.4 ounces (181 grams).

The UCO Candle Lantern uses specially made candles—available in paraffin, beeswax, and citronella. I used a set of beeswax candles because they emit fewer fumes and burn longer (12 hours vs. 9 for paraffin). Loading the candle is straightforward: remove the bottom, extract the spring and plate, and replace the candle. Spare parts are easy to find if needed.

Lighting the lantern was a bit tricky at first. Once assembled, extend the lantern and slide the glass down to expose the wick. A heat shield at the top allows airflow and helps extinguish the flame. While it provides some warmth, the chain and bail get very hot quickly, so caution is advised.

One Hour in a Cold Tent

I set up my REI Co-op Passage 2 tent in my yard, which I use as a three-season, two-person tent. Inside, I sat on a basic closed-cell foam pad and hung a thermometer. The outdoor temperature was 28°F (-2°C), and after ten minutes with the flap open, the inside temperature rose to 35°F (2°C).

To minimize body heat influence, I sat inside and zipped the tent. After ten minutes, the temperature reached 45°F (7°C). I then lit the UCO Candle Lantern and waited another ten minutes. The temperature barely moved, still around 45°F (7°C).

I tried lowering the lantern closer to the floor, near the door, to see if that improved results. After ten minutes, the temperature climbed to just under 50°F (10°C). According to the SAS Survival Handbook, this aligns with expected gains in a similar setup. However, much of the warmth likely came from my own body, not the candle alone.

Despite the slight increase, I felt colder over time, especially after lying down on the sleeping pad. My feet started losing feeling, even with a pair of Merino socks. In a real survival situation, I’d opt for a better sleeping pad and extra layers instead of relying on a candle.

While the UCO Candle Lantern is safe and functional, it’s not a strong heater. For larger spaces or extreme cold, a heavier three-candle model like the UCO Candleier Lantern might work better, though its weight could be an issue for a go-bag. Still, it's a solid alternative to dangerous methods like tea candles in pots.
