This Saturday, August 7th, CNN Films is set to premiere a half-hour documentary on the main CNN channel at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT. There will also be a second airing at 9 PM PT that same night. The film will then be available for streaming on CNN’s paid subscription plan starting the following day.
Jon Stokes, Tom Rader, Caleb Causey, and I, along with some of our family members, spent several days being interviewed for the documentary. We were told that our interviews make up roughly half of the film. Interestingly, the CNN crew came during the production of our new *Austere First Aid* video course, so they got some behind-the-scenes footage while we were shooting on location.

The documentary was originally intended to explore how more people from all backgrounds are joining the self-reliance and modern preparedness movement. It aims to show that this community isn’t what many people think — it's not all doomsday preppers or survivalists in bunkers. Instead, it highlights practical, rational ways to prepare for unexpected events without overreacting.
It’s great to see this community getting mainstream attention, which we truly deserve. That’s why we agreed to participate — we hoped it would be an honest and balanced portrayal, not the sensationalized clickbait that often dominates this space.
This film is made by the same team behind *Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak*, the Netflix series that dropped in January 2020. Talk about timing! The documentary was filmed in 2019 and even included interviews with experts warning about a potential novel coronavirus from China — something they said we weren’t ready for.
(Another reminder of how important it is to listen to experts and plan ahead.)
Since the pandemic changed the world, CNN reached out to the same filmmakers to create a follow-up piece: “Okay, it happened — so how are people reacting?â€
To be honest, I’m a bit cautious about how this will turn out. Mainstream media doesn’t always handle this kind of story well. But we trusted the filmmakers and thought it was worth a shot. Hopefully, people tune in expecting "doomsday bunker porn" but end up learning the real story instead.
Here’s the trailer:

So, we’ll see how it goes. But if you want to catch it for free and laugh at us being awkward dorks, tune in to CNN this Saturday night!
