I absolutely love the idea of decorating pumpkins without having to carve them. There's something about the messiness of carving that just isn't appealing to me. Last year, my family decided to try making emoji pumpkins, and it turned out to be such a fun project! The round shape of pumpkins makes them perfect for creating simple, expressive designs.
We started by giving the pumpkins a fresh coat of yellow spray paint. Make sure you do this in a well-ventilated area and follow the instructions on the can. I also recommend laying down plenty of newspaper to avoid any unwanted splatters. For our supplies, we used yellow spray paint, red, black, pink, and white craft foam, white and black bottle caps, old sunglasses, bandages, a black sharpie, and some blu tack.
The process was surprisingly easy and allowed us to get creative with different expressions. First, we created a cheeky pumpkin by sticking one googly eye on and drawing the other curved eye with the sharpie. Then, we cut out a tongue-shaped piece of pink craft foam and glued it onto a black foam mouth.
Next up was the scared pumpkin. For this one, we used white and black bottle caps to form the eyes, placing the black pupil at the top. A straight line drawn with the sharpie made for an effective frightened expression. The cool pumpkin was the simplest—just placing sunglasses on with blu tack and adding a smiley face with the sharpie.
For the loved-up pumpkin, we cut out two hearts from red foam and a smiling mouth from black foam, securing them with strong glue. And finally, we made a poorly pumpkin by drawing a sad face with the sharpie and wrapping a bandage around it, held in place with blu tack.
Once all the pumpkins were decorated, we arranged them either in a line or stacked them up for a cute display. To keep them steady, we hammered a wooden pin through the center.
These no-carve emoji pumpkins were such a hit that we’ve already got plans to expand our collection this year. They’re not only easy to make but also provide endless possibilities for creativity.
