Can green radish really remove formaldehyde?

On May 18th, "Curious Lab" did a test, put the commonly used green radish, activated carbon, air purifier, etc. in three contaminated rooms, close the doors and windows for one month, and then check again. Whether the pollution level in the three rooms has decreased.

The test results were originally scheduled to be announced on June 18th. However, due to the rainy season, the rainy weather continued and the air pressure was low. Under these conditions, the test results were easily affected. We had to delay the test time until June 30. These days, after laboratory analysis, the experimental report was finally released.

The formaldehyde content of the house decorated with environmentally friendly materials reaches moderate pollution.

Through the collection of newspapers, we chose a new house of Li Dabo, Dinghai East Park, Yongqing Road, as an experimental site. The house has a total area of ​​89 square meters, two rooms, one living room, one kitchen and one bathroom. The living room is about 30 square meters, and the two bedrooms are more than 10 square meters. The renovation began in mid-February this year and was officially completed on May 14.

Because of the fear of pollution, Li Dabo's decoration is relatively simple, and the decoration materials are also environmentally friendly as possible, but the taste in the house is still very pungent. In addition, Li Dabo's two bedrooms have made wardrobes , the material is five plywood, this plate is made up of 5 layers, and the layers are glued with glue.

Gu Peiqi, general manager of Hangzhou Liju Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. said that the most common pollution in home decoration is formaldehyde and benzene. The formaldehyde mainly comes from the glue and binder in the board, while the benzene pollution mainly comes from the paint.

Therefore, our experiments mainly detect three indicators of formaldehyde, benzene and TVOC (TVOC is a general term for all organic substances in indoor air, including benzene and more than ten kinds of organic chlorides, organic ketones, amines, alcohols, etc.).

The national standard for "concentration of indoor environmental pollutants in civil engineering construction class I" stipulates that the content of formaldehyde, benzene and TVOC should be limited to: formaldehyde ≤0.08mg/m2, benzene≤0.09mg/m2, TVOC≤0.5mg/m2.

In the decoration, the probability of the bathroom being polluted is the smallest, because most of the bathrooms use ceramic tiles and ceramic sanitary products, and there are few plates and paints. Therefore, our experiment chose Li Dabo's two bedrooms and living room to carry out.

After testing, the benzene and TVOC in the three rooms of Li Dabo did not exceed the standard, but the formaldehyde content in the main bedroom, the second bedroom and the living room were 0.298 mg/m2, 0.261 mg/m2 and 0.200 mg/m2, respectively. 3.7 times, 3.2 times and 2.5 times.

Chen Guoqing, deputy general manager of Hangzhou Luyu Zhongke Testing Technology Co., Ltd. said that the formaldehyde content is less than 3 times of the national standard, which is mild pollution, 3-5 times is moderate pollution, and more than 5 times is heavy pollution. All bedrooms are moderately polluted.

The formaldehyde concentration in the closed test is not lowered in 1 month.

After confirming that there was mild to moderate pollution in Li Dabo's house, our plant adsorption experiment officially began. For comparison, we also purchased an air purifier worth 999 yuan, 2 kg of activated carbon.

We closed all the doors and windows of Li Dabo's house, put 10 pots of green radish into the most polluted master bedroom, and poured water for three or four days. After disassembling 2 kg of activated carbon, it is scattered on the cabinets, drawers and the ground of the second bedroom. The air purifier is placed in the living room, running during the day and closed at night.

After more than one month, the experimenter tested the three rooms again. The results showed that the content of benzene in the three rooms was still not exceeded, but the content of formaldehyde and TVOC did not drop.

“After a month of door and window closure, harmful substances will accumulate and the degree of pollution will definitely increase. In addition, the temperature in June is about 15°C higher than that in May. The increase in temperature will also cause pollutants to be discharged.”

Chen Guoqing said that in theory, plants such as green radish, spider plant and tiger squash can indeed remove formaldehyde, because the roots of these plants have a symbiotic bacteria, which need to absorb formaldehyde as a nutrient to maintain life. However, its adsorption capacity is limited, and once the degree of contamination is too large, the adsorption is minimal. “In contrast, the adsorption of activated carbon and air purifiers is even worse.”

The most effective way to remove formaldehyde is to open doors and windows.

At the scene, we also did another test--open the main bedroom door and window that was closed for one month, and thoroughly ventilate for one hour before detecting the pollutant content in the room. As a result, the formaldehyde content of the main bedroom dropped to 0.093 mg/m2, which basically conformed to the national standard; the TVOC content was 0.11 mg/m2, which was far below the national standard.

Chen Guoqing said that after removing the formaldehyde pollution after decoration, whether it is plants, activated carbon or air purifiers, it can only be used as an auxiliary means. Window ventilation is the most effective. Within a few years after the renovation of the house, the habit of opening the window should be maintained. Especially in the summer, the formaldehyde in the decoration plate still has a residue, and it will continue to volatilize under high temperature.
