CNN airing documentary about The Prepared and this growing community

This Saturday, August 7th, CNN Films is set to premiere a half-hour documentary on the main CNN channel at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT, with a second airing scheduled for 9 PM PT. The film will also be available for streaming on CNN’s paid plan starting the next day. Jon Stokes, Tom Rader, Caleb Causey, and I, along with some of our family members, spent several days being interviewed for what we’re told makes up about half of the documentary. During that time, CNN’s production team was on location as we were working on the new Austere First Aid video course, giving them behind-the-scenes access to our work in action. ![Image](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/74498f687199ccb523fb72ab3103af3b.jpg) The documentary is supposed to explore how more people from all backgrounds are getting involved in the self-reliance and modern preparedness movement. It aims to show that this community is far different from the old stereotypes—highlighting practical, non-bunker ways to become ready for unexpected situations. It's truly exciting to see this community finally get mainstream attention, which we believe it deserves. That’s why we agreed to participate: we felt this would be a fair and balanced portrayal, not the sensationalist content that often dominates this space. The film is produced by the same team behind *Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak*, which aired on Netflix in January 2020. Talk about timing! The documentary, filmed in 2019, even featured interviews with experts warning about a potential novel coronavirus coming from something like a bat in China—and how unprepared we were for it. (Another reminder of how important it is to listen to experts and plan ahead.) Since the pandemic changed the world, CNN reached out to the same team to create a follow-up piece: “Okay, it happened. Now, how are people reacting?” To be honest, I’m a bit cautious about how this will turn out. Mainstream media doesn’t always handle these topics with fairness or depth. But we trusted the filmmakers and thought it was worth the risk. Hopefully, people tune in expecting "doomsday bunker porn" but end up learning the real story instead. Here’s the trailer: ![Image](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/6e81c45bcc2f64d69c3cdf235ef20334.jpg) So, we’ll see how it goes. But if you want to catch it for free and laugh at us being awkward dorks, tune in to CNN this Saturday night!
