The Making of an Award-Winning Kitchen Design: Blue Notte

Blue Notte Kitchen

And the big winner is… “Beauty in Blue Notte,” a fantastic kitchen designed by Laurysen’s Caroline Castrucci! This jaw-dropping contemporary design took home a GOHBA 2020 Housing Design Award.

I had the chance to sit down with Caroline to learn more about what went into creating this award-winning kitchen design.

What’s the story behind this project?

Caroline Laurysen Kitchens

This all began when a builder I work with called me. He was building some townhouses and wanted to create something truly special in one of the units.

We had just returned from EuroCucina, the world's largest kitchen design exhibition in Milan, which we visit every few years. The emerging trends in Europe inspired me for this design: deconstructed cabinetry, open shelving reaching up 10 or 12 feet, utilizing the full wall, and moving away from whites and greys towards blacks, dark browns, or navy tones.

What did the client want in terms of space, style, etc.?

Blue Notte Kitchen

Space-wise, the kitchen was small, and there were limitations — like the rail for the basement steps couldn't be moved. I aimed to incorporate plenty of storage while transforming the space into a standout feature. It’s always a challenge to be creative in smaller kitchens, but this one worked out beautifully.

Given that the home is very modern and the clients are a young couple in their 20s, we wanted a fresh, youthful vibe. The rest of the house's design was still in progress, so I had a clean canvas to work with.

Tell us about your color, texture, and material choices

About a few weeks prior, I had received samples of a brand-new product that I thought would be perfect for this kitchen. The navy shade was stunning—warm and rich, it really made a statement. It aligned perfectly with the current European trend, moving away from whites and greys.

The material is sustainable melamine, an MDF frame wrapped with polyester film. Unlike paint, it doesn’t peel or chip, making it far more durable. The matte finish texture is also a new look, similar to what we saw in Europe—it absorbs light beautifully, giving the cabinets a much richer appearance. Once the kitchen lighting was installed, it really enhanced the cabinets' depth.

We opted for gold hardware as the perfect accent, much like a pair of diamond earrings. We even used gold appliances, which give a warmer feel compared to stainless steel. These appliances are a new shade called champagne bronze. Notice the gold microwave stove hood—it’s only about 9 inches tall, quite different from the bulky 80s-style microwave fans.

The material over the hood and the refrigerator is also melamine, but it looks incredibly natural, just like slate. The only hint that it’s not actual slate is that it’s not cold to the touch.

One thing that really catches the eye is the metal framing around the island. Metal framing was a key trend at EuroCucina—almost every kitchen showcased it. It ties in beautifully with the open shelving above and below the cabinetry.

Another incredible feature is the quartz countertop, filled with golden specks and a hint of amethyst purple.

What makes this an award-winning design?

It’s open, airy, and fun. There’s a definite wow factor. Yet, it remains practical and comfortable to work in.

That’s my test when designing a kitchen—I always aim to ensure it’s functional as well as beautiful.
