HOW TO INSTALL DECKING
We’ve put together a comprehensive guide on installing a single-level deck with a timber frame. Our aim is to ensure your decking not only looks great but remains safe for you and your loved ones. Follow us step-by-step through planning and preparation, construction, and crucial safety measures.
Planning and Preparation
Before you choose the spot for your deck, there are several factors to keep in mind.
- Avoid areas prone to dampness, as they can lead to mold and rot.
- Areas heavily shaded may need more frequent maintenance due to algae growth.
- Ensure the location offers the right balance of sunlight and privacy.
Alongside selecting the perfect location, it’s essential to have a detailed plan for your deck. This will help minimize cutting and waste while giving you a good estimate of the materials required.
When designing the deck, it’s ideal to plan it in such a way that it uses whole deck boards to avoid having to cut them lengthwise to fit awkward spaces.
Additionally, consider incorporating 5-8mm gaps between deck boards to allow for proper ventilation and expansion.
Building Your Deck
To ensure your decking stands the test of time, we recommend using structural treated timber and specific decking screws. Here’s what you’ll need to install a decking:
- Weed control fabric
- Wood for framework
- Decking screws
- 100mm nails
- Wood preserver
- 25mm x 50mm wood for stakes
- Decking planks
- Concrete slabs
You’ll also need some key tools to assist in the installation process:
- Tape measure
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Hammer
- Spirit level
- Screwdrivers
- Workbench
- Gloves
- Mitre saw
With your location chosen, plans finalized, and tools ready, you’re now set to begin building your decking.
Constructing the Deck Frame
1. Compact any loose soil in the designated area using a thumper or heavy roller.
2. Lay down weed control fabric to prevent weeds from growing through the deck boards.
3. Place concrete slabs at the corners and center points of the site to provide a stable base and elevate the wood frame above damp ground.
4. Assemble a basic rectangular frame; the decking will overhang slightly on all sides.
5. Position the joists within the frame, spaced approximately 400mm apart.
6. Secure the joists with nails.
7. Ensure the main frame is level. Use slate or tile pieces where necessary to achieve the correct height.
INSTALLING THE DECKING
1. Cut 60cm pointed stakes from the 25mm x 50mm timber.
2. Apply multiple coats of wood preserver to the stakes and drive them into the ground at the four inner corners of the frame.
3. Reinforce the structure by screwing the stakes into the frame.
4. Add extra stability by fitting noggins along the centerline of the frame.
5. Lay out the decking planks, spacing them about 5mm apart, and secure them with two screws per joist.
6. Sand and plane the edges of the outer corners to create a rounded finish.
7. Attach additional decking planks along the sides of the frame.
8. Protect all cut surfaces and drilled holes with two coats of preservative.
TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR DECK
Once your decking is complete, you can apply a high-quality decking stain to enhance protection and durability.
If your deck is located in a shaded area, it's wise to treat the wood annually to prolong its lifespan.
Regularly remove dirt and debris to keep the deck looking fresh and clean.
Small, frequent maintenance tasks are much easier to handle than major repairs later on. Addressing issues early saves both time and effort.
An annual inspection routine should include:
- Checking for loose decking boards and replacing any missing or loose nails.
- Cleaning thoroughly with a specialized deck-cleaning product.
- Sealing the deck to protect against moisture and UV rays.
ENSURING SAFETY
Over time, repeated use, temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to humidity can weaken even treated wood. It’s advisable to inspect your deck annually to confirm its safety.
Here are some key points to check:
1. Look for loose decking boards and replace any that are missing or insecure.
2. Inspect the wood for softness or sponginess, which could indicate decay requiring replacement.
3. Check for rust on nails and screws, ensuring they remain intact and secure.
Every few years, consider hiring a professional to conduct a thorough inspection of your deck.
