How to Safely Package Plants – The Packaging Specialist

By Carl Board • Friday 19th February 2016

As winter winds down and spring approaches, it's the perfect time to get outside and enjoy longer days filled with fresh air. However, if you're dealing with delicate plants, packaging them properly can feel like a daunting task—especially when you’re transporting them via courier.

Today at the clinic, we received a query from someone working in environmental conservation. Richard works for a company focused on rescuing native flora and fauna from areas impacted by development projects. He reached out because his team needs advice on how best to secure their potted plants during shipping. Here’s what he shared:

Dear Doctor,
I’m hoping you can assist us!
We’re an eco-friendly business dedicated to saving local plants and wildlife from areas where natural habitats are being destroyed. Our challenge now is finding a way to keep the plants securely in place while avoiding spillage of the soil during transportation. Since these plants will be shipped via courier service, safety is paramount.
Thanks in advance,
Richard

Hi Richard,

Thank you for reaching out! It sounds like your organization is doing incredibly important work, and it’s inspiring to hear about your commitment to preserving nature. Transporting plants can indeed be tricky since they’re often lightweight and prone to shifting around during transit. But don’t worry—I’ve got just the right solutions for you.

First off, consider using our ultra-heavy-duty boxes. These containers are built specifically for high-stakes shipments involving heavy or extremely fragile goods. They’ve undergone extensive Edge Crush Testing to guarantee top-tier protection against damage.

For added stability, I’d recommend incorporating our Speedman Box manual paper void-fill system. This approach is fantastic for smaller-scale operations and ensures that your plants won’t shift around inside the box. Additionally, wrapping each plant in a polyethylene bag prior to packing it into the box can help prevent moisture from soaking the paper filler and causing unwanted dampness.

Finally, I suggest adding handling labels to your packages. These stickers serve as clear instructions for couriers to handle the items gently throughout the delivery process.

I trust these tips will make a significant difference in keeping your precious cargo safe. If you have further questions or need additional guidance, feel free to reach out anytime!

Wishing you success in your noble mission,
The Packaging Specialist
