The old-fashioned manual megohmmeter, also known as the insulation resistance shaker, is a meter that measures high resistance and is often used to measure the insulation resistance of electrical equipment or power lines. It is a portable instrument with a dial of the megohmmeter in megaohms (MΩ).

The measuring mechanism of the commonly used hand-cranked DC generator type megohmmeter is shown in the figure. It consists of a permanent magnet, two moving coils fixed on the same rotating shaft, a notched cylindrical iron core and a pointer.

Principle: When the handle is evenly shaken at a speed of 120 rpm, the DC generator in the meter outputs the rated voltage of the meter. There is a current I1 between the measured resistances in the moving coil 1-5, and an additional resistor Ru in the moving coil table. Current I2, the two currents react with the magnetic field to produce the opposite torque. When the I1 current is maximum (ie, the measured resistance is 0), the pointer points to the scale 0. When the I2 current is the largest (ie, the open state), the pointer points to the scale ∝,

When the measured resistance is a certain value, the pointer refers to the value of the measured resistance. Since the megohmmeter has no hairspring and cannot generate a reaction torque, the megohmmeter stays at any position (ie, not positioned), not back. To zero, this is different from other pointer-type instruments.
