Is artificial turf and filling particles harmful to the environment?

As to whether the rubber granules in the artificial turf are harmful to the environment, it has been proved through experiments that it is harmless to the environment and will not cause any pollution to the environment.

The environmental unit under the French government, in cooperation with the French Ministry of Environment and Energy Management, has recently completed an experimental project on the extraction of rubber granules from used tires. Does not harm human health.

The research mainly focused on sports grounds using rubber particles, such as the use of a football field with artificial turf, to test whether the water quality that has penetrated and discharged from the site would pollute the surrounding environment, and in addition, the air quality of the surrounding environment. It is also the goal of sampling analysis, mainly for gas detection emitted by rubber particles.

In order to ensure the authenticity and reliability of the test data, the researchers selected the three main rubber particles on the market as testing samples, filled them into three identical artificial turf samples, and finally put the three artificial turf. Placed in different environments around the world.

Samples of these three kinds of particles are: SBR particles decomposed from used car tires, novel thermoplastic elastomer particles TPE particles, and ethylene propylene diene monomer EPDM particles.

In addition, the researchers also placed an artificial turf without any filler material as an additional contrast sample.

The entire experiment began in 2005. In the football field under normal use conditions, the researcher focused on the detection of water and emissions from the site and obtained the following results:

Report on the use of three types of filler materials

1, rubber particles have no effect on water quality.

2. After the gas emitted from the artificial turf is inhaled by the human body, there is no relevant link to the health condition.

3. Artificial turf using SBR and TPE rubber particles as filling material. The content of the emissions is very low, reaching the level of “Relatively low” in Europe. It is safe for the environment.

4. Artificial turf pitches using EPDM particles have a high content of emissions.

5. According to the strict European standards, the water flowing out of the artificial turf from the experimental samples will have no impact on the environment.

INERIS France's National Institute of Industrial Environment and Risk Research has released an HRE health risk assessment. The main content is the research on the harmful effects of indoor materials on the health of human body.

The HRE Health Assessment Report submitted by INERIS stated that in the worst case of indoor small and unventilated, the substances emitted from the three kinds of filling particles will not cause any harm to the human body.

In this way, there will be no health risks for construction workers, athletes, adults and children in the stadium.

In addition, in the report, it was finally pointed out that the substances emitted by outdoor artificial turf have no relevance to human health.

Similar reports on environmental hazards of rubber granules and artificial turf have yielded similar results in other countries and organizations in the world. They are:
