Glass bottle suppliers do everything possible to save the market

The increasingly prominent performance of carton and PET bottle packaging in the convenience of consumers has made glass manufacturers uneasy. Glass manufacturers have to begin to pay attention to this issue. As a result, glass manufacturers have also begun to emphasize the advantages of glass bottles that are "more environmentally friendly than before." Glass manufacturers also work with customers to use innovative technologies to improve the performance of glass bottles.

Michael Lonsway said that the recently completed "Creation Center" in Ohio, USA, is an important product of OI's organic integration of market promotion and technological innovation. "Creation Center" will become a high-tech center where OI's engineers, designers, R&D teams, and marketers gather. Here, OI will work with customers to work together to achieve breakthroughs in the glass packaging industry. OI plans to connect this 2,500-square-foot (about 232m2) facility to its creation center in Europe, South America, and the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, the first innovative technology will be available in a few months. Michael Lonsway said: “Since the establishment of this center, more than a dozen important customers have come to the center to discuss suitable glass packaging solutions.”

In terms of technology, Lonsway said that OI is developing a new type of black glass. Excellent UV-blocking properties make this black glass not only help customers in the beer industry improve product quality, but also apply to other common glass applications.

As consumers and beverage marketers increasingly prefer environmentally-friendly packaging, the glass industry responded quickly, emphasizing the high recycling rates of glass bottles and the environmental advantages of such packaging. The rate of reuse of cullet is usually very different depending on where it is produced. For example, the recycling rate in California is 35%, while in Europe it is 60%. The American Glass Packaging Association and its member organizations have made a commitment that by 2013, the recycling rate of broken glass will not be less than 50%.


Horacio Trujillo, marketing manager of Vitro Packaging, said: “In order to provide our customers with a glass bottle that is made of recycled cullet, we have increased the amount of broken glass by 10%, while also reducing the use of other materials. 8% of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide were also reduced by 4% and 10%, respectively, which resulted in a 3% to 4% reduction in the final energy consumption of glass bottles.”

The glass manufacturing industry is also working to reduce the energy consumption in the production of glass bottles and introduce lightweight technologies. Vitro has worked with Wente Family Estates, a Californian wine company, to reduce the weight of its glass bottles by an average of 23%. OI also helped Fetzer Vineyards reduce the carbon emissions of glass bottles by 14%. Dr. Ann Thrupp, Sustainability Manager at Fetzer Vineyards Wines, said: “Our glass lightweight solution uses a double bottom line innovation. It is environmentally friendly and can increase productivity so it can support us. The sustainable development goals."

OI also announced that it has invested A$35 million in its Adelaide, Australia, plant to invest in equipment and improve production processes, and to “slim down” wine bottles to achieve a 28% weight reduction. By then, the annual carbon emissions from the Adelaide plant in Australia will be reduced by more than 11,130 tons. Not only that, the average production water consumption per container in the Adelaide plant will also drop by 12%, while the material saved each year can be used to produce 20,000 tons of glass bottles.
