China Digital Network Success Stories—Computer Center Network of East China University of Science and Technology

Background introduction

East China University of Science and Technology was formerly known as East China Institute of Chemical Technology. At the beginning of its establishment, the school has gradually developed into a national key university with engineering as the main body, distinctive chemical characteristics, and coordinated development of disciplines such as engineering, economics, management, grammar and law; Approved by the State Education Commission, renamed East China University of Science and Technology.

Network status

Existing situation:

The East China University of Science and Technology computing center has nearly 500 PCs, mainly distributed on the second floor of the computing center. The original network equipment adopts 2 INTEL 550T as the backbone, and connects the non-network management switch with 100M to the desktop. Because it is a 100M backbone, the network storm is greater and the Internet speed is slower.

Situation after transformation:

Adding 220 PCs on the fourth floor of the Eighth Religion requires 1000M to connect to the computing center. The computing center adds a core layer 3 switch. The computing center and the network center establish a gigabit fiber connection. After the transformation, the network implements VLAN division to isolate broadcast storms. The original INTEL 550T was placed as a sub-center switch to the Gigabit Network Institute and connected to the core switch. Realize a gigabit backbone three-layer switching network. The computing center requires the backbone to be Gigabit, Gigabit to the building, and 100M to the desktop.

demand analysis

Application characteristics of campus network

The campus network is different from the current general corporate network in China, and has the following characteristics in comparison:

1. Large network load: Due to the realization of Video On Demand (Video On Demand), CD-ROM software and data reading and the use of pure software to achieve media network teaching, the amount of multimedia information has been greatly increased, and the network bandwidth requirements are very high.

2. Large network management and maintenance workload: After the campus network is built, one of the most important applications is multimedia applications. The computer will be used frequently, and the computer will also be used for self-learning. The utilization rate of the computer is very high, so the management And maintenance tasks will be very difficult.

3. High utilization rate: Because the computer will be applied to daily work, the utilization rate of network equipment and PC is very high.

Data type analysis

East China University of Science and Technology mainly involves the following data types: information management data (MIS information), OA and E-MAIL information, and video teaching.

Network function analysis

For the network system of East China University of Science and Technology, we believe that it should have the following typical network functions and services:
Network reliability: The network must be able to guarantee long-term continuous operation;
Guarantee of network service quality (QoS): It can provide different service quality and transmission and transmission priority for different users and different applications, and can discard priority packets when the network bandwidth is tight;
Network scalability service: to meet the rapid growth needs of East China Institute of Technology Computing Center in the next 3 to 5 years and protect user investment;
Network security services: to ensure the legality of users' access to network resources;
Network multimedia services: use Multicast technology to improve the bandwidth utilization of desktop video systems;
Network management services: configure, monitor, count, and manage the effective operation of the network.

Network system solution

The wiring is centered on the building where the computing center is located, and the optical fiber is laid to the wiring rooms of other buildings, all of which use multi-mode outdoor optical fibers. The wiring in the building adopts super five types of wiring products, and four pairs of UTP cables are laid around the wiring room to each working position.

Network equipment

In view of the current situation of the East China Institute of Technology computing center, we recommend the following scheme, placing a core layer 3 switch in the computing center and configuring 12 gigabit fiber interfaces (1 for uplink to the network center; 1 for downlink to CISCO 3500; 4 are used to connect to the access layer switch on the fourth floor of the 8th Jiao; 3 are used to connect 3 HP servers; the other three are used as future expansion interfaces).

The CISCO3524 gigabit of the original computing center is connected to the DCRS-7504, and two INTEL550Ts are cascaded below. All the switches used originally are cascaded to 3624 and 550T.

The 220 information points on the fourth floor of the Eighth Teaching Department are distributed in four classrooms, two of which use a 48-port switch DCS-3652 Gigabit uplink DCRS-7504; the other two classrooms use two 72-port DCS-3628S Stack switch Gigabit uplink DCRS-7504.
VLAN and Layer 3 switching strategy

Through the division of VLANs, teachers are allowed to access certain file servers and applications, while students are not allowed. A cross-switch VLAN based on port VLAN tagging can be specified by the instructor or network administrator to achieve limited access to, for example, the management file server. This port-based VLAN is more suitable for fixed users such as desktop computers. For mobile users who use laptops (such as teachers), VLANs based on IP subnets have better application flexibility and simplicity, regardless of whether the user is on campus In any area of the network, the core routing switch DCRS-7504 can determine the VLAN to which it belongs and the authority to access network resources based on its IP address. DCRS-7504's hardware routing switching function based on ASIC technology can realize wire-speed cross-VLAN Layer 3 switching.

Network management

In order to accurately monitor the settings and manage the operation of the entire network equipment, we use China Digital LinkManager network management software to perform comprehensive network management of China Digital ’s network management switch products, including: real-time monitoring of equipment, real-time data flow monitoring of switch ports Analysis, division and management of virtual networks, management of Layer 3 switching, etc.

The Digital China LinkManager network management system is a set of highly integrated, fully functional, practical, and easy-to-use network management software based on the Windows NT platform. It is based on the actual needs of Chinese users, and it follows the five functional domains of the ISO network management model (performance management, configuration management, fault management, billing management, and security management). It has a self-developed set of own knowledge. Property right network management system software.
