On Advantages of Applying Adhesives in Flexible Packaging

With the development of composite flexible packaging materials in China, the use of composite adhesives has also passed over 20 years of history. Since the mid-1970s, Shanghai first developed the use of extrusion coating and extrusion compounding methods to manufacture simple food-use composite flexible packaging materials. By the late 1970s, it had first developed a more advanced method using dry composite methods. Composite flexible packaging materials for food production, from the general simple flexible food packaging materials for food, to 121 °C high temperature cooking 40 minutes plastic / plastic cooking bag and more advanced aluminum / plastic cooking bag. At the same time, dry composite adhesives were developed simultaneously.

We know that to use dry method to make composite flexible packaging materials, in addition to a variety of plastic film and aluminum foil substrate, but also to use adhesives. The earliest used is a one-component solvent-based pressure-sensitive adhesive made of butyl rubber. By combining it with PET, PT and PE films, it can be made into the simplest and most original composite flexible packaging material. Compress cookies, candy, and mustard. By the end of the 1970s, due to the development of cooking bags that were resistant to high temperature cooking at 121°C for 40 minutes, one-component pressure-sensitive adhesives would obviously not work. Therefore, Shanghai first developed a two-component high-performance polyurethane adhesive. Of course, this kind of adhesive has long been industrialized in China in the 1960s, but its performance does not meet the requirements of composite flexible packaging. There are high boiling points of solvents, serious odors, too many residual monomers, and poor sanitation performance. Reliable, early tack is too small and other defects, can not be used to manufacture qualified food packaging materials in dry compounding, so to the United States, Japan at the level of the goal, re-development research in line with food hygiene and safety, can withstand 121 °C40 Minute cooked 2-component polyurethane adhesive. After more than two years of research, he finally passed the appraisal of the State Science and Technology Commission and the Ministry of Light Industry in August 1981 and completed this task.

Since 1980, China’s gradual reform and opening up, the people’s living standards have improved significantly, the market economy has become increasingly active, the food industry has developed rapidly, the main and subsidiary foods have become increasingly abundant, the demand for improved packaging has also increased, and the demand for composite flexible packaging materials is high. Therefore, Shanghai, Wuxi, and Dalian first introduced a relatively advanced production line of composite flexible packaging materials from Japan, including multi-color combined intaglio printing machines, dry laminating machines, bag making machines, slitting machines, and corresponding testing instruments. The development of modern composite soft packaging industry in China has played a leading role. However, the gravure inks, adhesives, PET, OPP, OPA, CPP, and aluminum foil needed for the production of composite flexible packaging materials are all imported.

In order to meet the needs of domestic composite flexible packaging production, since the first half of the 1980s, all parts of China have vigorously developed flexible packaging production equipment, and flexible packaging machinery manufacturers in Shanghai, Wuxi, Haining, and Guangdong have developed rapidly. Color printing flexible packaging materials manufacturing companies have also boomed, leading to soaring demand for imported gravure inks and dry composite adhesives. Under such circumstances, the production technology of polyurethane adhesives for food composite packaging materials in Shanghai has industrialized production soil. Therefore, in 1984, China first established a production base of China's food grade polyurethane adhesive with an annual output of 60 tons. With this model base, the packaging industry has seen the hope and prospect of localization of adhesives. In just two or three years, two or three places have successively established enterprises with an annual output of about 500 tons, which has officially started. The climax of localization of adhesives. In the mid-1980s, the Beijing Chemical Research Institute cooperated with Henkel in Germany to use the technology provided by Henkel to produce dry solvent-based two-component polyurethane adhesives for domestic use. However, the production technology of the curing agent does not cooperate, but also imports from Germany, after sub-assembly and supporting the use of domestic production of the main agent. Later, through his own research and development, he himself mastered the production technology of curing agents and used domestic production of curing agents instead of imported products, which was used in conjunction with the main agents produced in China.

Polyurethane adhesives produced in the 1980s in the country have less variety on the one hand, and are mostly used in low-middle-range composite flexible packaging materials that are not too demanding. On the other hand, there are some defects in quality, such as the viscosity of the glue is too high, and the antifreeze Poor sex, easy to freeze in winter, when used must first warmed to 50 ~ 60 °C, let it melt before they can be poured out from the packaging barrel to prepare the operating solution, on the other hand, the film does not have much function, bonding The force is not very high, and the resistance to medium is poor. Therefore, despite a lot of production and many users, there are still opinions on this product. Some large factories are willing to buy and use adhesives made in Germany, Japan, the United States, and France at high prices.

Researchers in Shanghai have started research since the late 1980s, in addition to studying aliphatic urethanes that meet the US FDA regulations and filled the domestic market, they also study functional adhesives. The purpose is to solve the problems of our country's Sichuan mustard and Zhejiang mustard soft bags. Quality issues. It turned out that OPP/AL/PE mustard bags made with domestic adhesives at that time, due to the adhesive is not acid, salty, spicy corrosion, packaged mustard after soaking in hot water at 80 ~ 90 °C for 10 minutes, the inner PE and AL The automatic slicing has been carried out, resulting in bags must be broken and leaking out before the mustard is on the market. The mustard factory claims from the packing material factory. After about two years, in 1991, Shanghai Shenhua Technology Co., Ltd. first introduced to the market special adhesives for aluminum foil corrosion resistant and resistant to boiling water at 100°C. It was used by color printing plants in Zhejiang and Fuling. Into a mustard bag to solve the problem. In the following years, due to the widespread adoption of this adhesive, the phenomenon of complaints or claims made by the pickled mustard production plant to the color printing and packing material factory should be reduced year by year, and only by 1996. What I couldn't imagine was that the adhesive produced by Shanghai technology also solved the quality problem that the aluminum coating had to be transferred and the peel force was zero after the aluminum coating was compounded. It could be used for vacuum aluminum coating of M-PET, M-CPP, etc. The composite fastness is improved from the original one to more than 1N/15mm, the best one is 3~4N/15mm, and the aluminized layer will not be transferred by 100%. In more than ten years, it has been designated by the majority of users as aluminum plating. Films, jelly covers, and acid-resistant, salty-salt composite film adhesives have also been designated as composite films for wine films by soft wine bag compounders. Due to the reliable and stable quality of this glue, it was first exported to Singapore in the first half of the 1990s and became the first domestically-available adhesive only.

With the increasing application scope of composite flexible packaging materials, it is not only used in the packaging of food and medicine, but also used in the packaging of daily necessities, cosmetics, detergents, sanitary products, pesticides and certain chemicals, so the functional requirements More urgent. To this end, Shanghai Lieyin Chemical Co., Ltd., established by Shanghai Shenhua Science and Technology Co., Ltd., began to improve the quality of adhesives on the original basis since the beginning of 1997, making the functions of aluminum foil adhesives more comprehensive and the application fields further expanded. Finally, the concept of functional adhesives was first introduced in mid-1998, and functional adhesive products were introduced to the market at the same time. Among the series of functional adhesives, some have anti-acid, alkali, spicy, salty, and oily functions, others have anti-benzene, toluene, xylene, esters, hydrocarbons, alcohol, surfactants, and the content is less than 20%. The DMF organic solvent mixture, pesticides and other erosion features, and some are suitable for 128 °C long (or even 120 minutes) cooking plastic / plastic, aluminum / plastic composite use. In the functional series, the company has LY-50A/LY-50AH, LY-9850R/LY-9875R, LY-50VR/LY-50VRH, and LY-9850/LY-9850H models.

China's adhesives for composite flexible packaging have been manufactured from scratch since the mid-1980s. The number of production enterprises has grown from scratch, and there have been only a few companies from the few to the present. The variety ranges from single to multiple, and the quality ranges from low to high. The type is from ordinary type to functional type to special type. It can be said that there are some in the world, our country has common rubber, functional plastic, plastic/plastic, aluminum/plastic, low temperature resistant plastic, high temperature resistant plastic, aromatic It is also used in food and packaging adhesives, as well as pesticides and chemical packaging adhesives, solvent-based adhesives, solvent-free adhesives, non-flame retardant adhesives and flame-retardant adhesives.

As mentioned earlier, at present, nearly 300 companies in China have produced adhesives for composite flexible packaging. The capacity of the equipment has reached 100,000 tons per year, far exceeding the market demand of 300,000 tons. However, due to the different technical levels of various companies, different development and research capabilities, the quality of products varies, and the adaptability of products varies. Therefore, some manufacturers' adhesive products are compared with imported or domestic famous brand products. There is a big gap. In order to arouse everyone's attention, in order to promote the healthy development of the adhesive, the author here talks about three issues.

First, the quality of products of some enterprises is not stable enough and their volatility is large. Most of these enterprises were founded in the last three or five years. They are based on a very shallow foundation, have poor technical skills and low quality of personnel. In particular, the first-line production personnel have insufficient experience and quality control methods are not smart and unstable.

Therefore, the author believes that "the more you know, the better you do." Some companies in China now rely on improper means to obtain adhesive production technology, or buy technology secretly, buy formulas, or secretly dig people, hire consultants, etc., but none of them have mastered comprehensive technology fundamentally, but only get certain surfaces. In part, the key core content has not yet been grasped, and there are shortcomings in the product, even though it is also patted on the chest when selling: "My product quality is the same as the XXX brand, and the price is cheap, so you can rest assured that you use it well." However, after real comparison and rigorous testing, it will be found that it will take time to really achieve quality and long-term stability.

This has another problem, that is, as a user, we must learn a lesson and not excessively pursue cheapness. When choosing any raw and auxiliary materials, we must put quality first and price second. Without quality, there is no quantity, no output, no cost and no benefit at all! Just think, using inferior adhesives, made a scrapped product, how to measure the loss? Therefore, the author believes that all enterprises that produce adhesives should endure basic skills, strengthen technical training, strict quality control and supervision, and improve product quality. Do not easily introduce unsure “new products”.

Secondly, adhesives manufacturers must follow the principle of "seeking truth from facts and honesty and credit". They must oppose and stop the unscientific mentality of exaggeration and impetuousness, and must not resort to falsification or fraud, or mislead consumption. Because in the first two or three years of investigation, the user found that the adhesive had a low solids content, and the weight of the package was less than two. This caused the user to suffer losses. This practice is inconsistent with the actual situation of China's adhesives for composite flexible packaging, and it does not benefit the healthy development of this product. On the contrary, it will only cause Yelang to become arrogant and rest on its laurels. It will only widen the gap with the real world advanced level and cause the entire industry to suffer losses.

As a company that applies adhesives, it must not be excessively pursuing low-price purchases. Under the conditions of a mature market economy, the principle of “a price for one product” is always correct. Excessive pursuit of low prices will only lead to a decline in product quality and loss of certain functions. At present, because the adhesive products have been oversupply, the price has dropped to the critical point of cost, and it is unlikely to drop again every year. Therefore, it is forcing some low-cost sales companies to use low-cost methods at the expense of certain properties. Products, in turn, companies that apply adhesives, if they are too low, they will not be able to buy “quality”, buy “relaxed”, and pursue low prices blindly. Instead, they will bring instability, defects, and worries. Therefore, it is unrealistic and undesirable to apply pressure to adhesive suppliers and require adhesives to reduce prices year after year.

Third, in many domestic brands of adhesives, they have undergone stringent health and safety tests and have obtained few hygiene approvals or production licenses. Many companies have said that their products meet the health standards, but they do not provide health approval documents, production license approval documents or safety toxicology evaluation test reports, many companies will be required by the Food Hygiene Supervision and Inspection Institute or Institute of Preventive Medicine (institutions) Adhesives for safety and health testing are sent to the drug testing agency for inspection, and only simple acute toxicity (LD50) tests are conducted, and specific numbers for LD50 are not provided. In addition, some enterprises do not conduct any health tests at all, nor do they have any approval procedures. There are no health approval documents or production license numbers on their product manuals or packaging drums. They are in the state of unlicensed production and unlicensed sales. Worrying. During the actual investigation, it was also found that individual companies knowingly made mistakes and applied some toxic and harmful substances to adhesives in order to reduce costs and facilitate low-cost sales. However, this poses hidden dangers to the overall hygienic performance of composite flexible packaging materials and potential harm to consumers. Here, it is important to remind users that when purchasing adhesives, they need to have more than one eye. They must obtain a health approval document, production license, or safety toxicology evaluation test report from the supplier in order to promote the safer adhesives in China and allow consumption. No worries.

In order to promote the healthy development of adhesives for composite flexible packaging, it is beneficial to the improvement of the level of China's composite flexible packaging industry. From a long-term perspective, it is recommended that relevant departments in China organize some influential units in nearly 300 adhesive production enterprises in the country. The application unit, together with the food hygiene supervision department and the food and drug production enterprises applying composite flexible packaging materials, jointly formulate the industry or national standards for the adhesives for composite flexible packaging materials, and uniformly regulate the product quality, testing items and testing methods to replace the current ones. The various corporate standards in the ordinal state are conducive to the healthy development of adhesive products.

Bamboo utensils have increasingly become more popular over the years. More and more people are turning to bamboo instead of wood for loads of reasons.
Unlike wood, bamboo is not a tree, but actually a grass - but don't be fooled! Bamboo was actually used as reinforcement for concrete instead of steel at one point, and was also used to support bridges (comparably just as strong as steel).
Bamboo can grow as much as 35 inches in 24 hours vs 3' to 4' per year for trees that harvest wood
An entire bamboo forest can be regenerated in three to five years
Bamboo reaches it's full level of maturity before harvesting - about 5-7 years (Wood is about 30 years until harvest)
