According to foreign media reports, FlexFilms, a US-based film processor, has developed a new high barrier metallized polyester film with better metal adhesion and better barrier properties in harsh environments. The price is lower than metallized polyester film before and it is very cost-effective.
Metallized polyester films have become increasingly popular due to their high barrier properties in laminating flexible packaging structures. However, poor adhesion of the metal to the base polyester film can cause lamination failure, which can affect product performance.
Films with high metal adhesion have good high barrier properties and are currently available in harsh environments, but their applications are very limited and expensive. To solve this problem, Flex Films, a Kentucky-based company, designed a high barrier metalized polyester film, FLEXMETPROTECTF-HMB. The film is metallized on a specially treated composite surface and the other surface is not treated or corona treated. This treatment allows the metal adhesion or bond strength to be greater than 1200 gram-force/in.
Since FlexFilms is the global thin-film manufacturing division of Uflex, the largest multinational flexible packaging material company in India, FLEXMETPROTECTF-HMB can be supplied at Uflex plants worldwide. Dr. Steven J. Sargeant, general manager of FlexFilms's technology department, said when talking about the new development: “The adhesion of metal to BOPET-based film (biaxially stretched polyester film) is the sum of chemical and mechanical adhesion. We performed the base film. The professional surface treatment can increase the level of chelation and reaction with the deposited metal to obtain better adhesion.Professional surface treatment includes materials with unique and enhanced properties, so it can achieve stronger mechanical bonding.We spent 18 It took only months to develop this film."
Vijay Yadav, head of FlexFilms business, cited the following advantages of the film:
â— Strong metal adhesion in the harshest environments;
Improve defects such as wear, scratches, and cracks, and increase production by 4%, providing unparalleled processing strength and high performance of the converter;
◠At 23°C and 0% relative humidity, the oxygen transmission rate is 0.6cc/sqm/day, and at 38°C and 90% relative humidity, the moisture transmission rate is 0.6g/sqm/day;
â— Conforms to EU and U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations for food grade applications;
â— has a good cost-effectiveness.
FLEXMETPROTECTF-HMB film thickness can reach 8 to 50μm, can be widely used in liquid packaging, stand-up pouch, box bag products, chemical packaging, pharmaceutical packaging and hot filling bags up to 80 °C.
According to Anantshree Chaturvedi, CEO and Vice Chairman of FlexFilms, “Our company focuses on the manufacturing of specialty substrates, adding real value to converter manufacturers and their customers' businesses by improving the quality and shape of the final packaging. Our company’s future expansion strategy will be It is a niche product rather than a commodity driver.FLEXMETPROTECTF-HMB is a very advanced technology film that is in great demand.If you consider only the U.S. market, the film market will also account for about 25% of the current metallized film. â€
